30th Anniversary of the Day of Restoration of Independence of the Republic of Estonia
You are cordially invited to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the Day of Restoration of Independence of the Republic of Estonia on Friday, August 2Oth, 2021 at 12:30 pm PDT (Pacific Daylight Time) at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum (40 Presidential Drive, Simi Valley, CA 93065).
12:30 – Arrival
1 pm – Luncheon
3–5 pm – Docent-led Tour
As part of the day’s celebration there will be a display of books and documents that reflect the work for Estonian independence that took place outside of Estonia during the 1980s and complemented the fight for independence that took place within Estonia. The local Estonian dance group Kivikasukas took on the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics; Estonians from Estonia surprised local Los Angeles Marathon organizers; The Soviet Consul General in San Francisco invited the Los Angeles Estonian Honorary Consul to a black-tie event; Baltic American Freedom League organized conferences and demonstrations; and more.
As a country affected by Russia, "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall" – words spoken by President Ronald Reagan – played a very important part in Estonian Independence. Known as the Berlin Wall Speech, given on June 12, 1987 and viewed by the entire world while Regan stood at the Brandenburg Gate. This is one of the reasons we choose to celebrate at The Reagan Library.
The speech included these words:
"There is one sign the Soviets can make that would be unmistakable, that would advance dramatically the cause of freedom and peace. General Secretary Gorbachev, if you seek peace, if you seek prosperity for the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, if you seek liberalization: Come here to this gate! Mr. Gorbachev, open this gate! Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!"
You can view it here again:
Also, 2021 marks the 40th anniversary of the inauguration of Ronald Reagan as America’s 40th president. It’s a year of re-examining his legacy, re-telling one of America’s greatest stories, re-living a remarkable run as President, and introducing an icon to a new generation.
