30 January marks the official start of the Year of the Estonian Book, celebrating 500 since the publication of the first book in Estonian (quite a feat!). On this occasion, we would like to highlight some recently published books that soothe the soul and nourish the mind.

 

Südames laulavad metsad  an anthology of Estonian forest-inspired poetry

Doris Kareva has brought together verses by Estonian poets dedicated to the forest, ranging from Juhan Liiv and Ernst Enno to young authors who have only recently made their debut. Filmmaker Anna Hints said the book is like a walk around Estonia's forests and has a calming and empowering effect.

Kodukäija koodeks by Valdur Mikita 

Mikita says he does not have the strength to write books about the forest all the time, which is why he changed it up with a funny book where simple questions will show the reader how true an Estonian they are.

Mostly known as a poet, Kristiina Ehin has published her second novel that reveals her hidden side.

Juhuslike sõnade raamat by Priit Põhjala

A linguistic treat exploring how words are coined and how they evolve, various nuances and differences in different languages and much more. The more than a hundred words featured in the book are illustrated by portraits of notable linguistic innovators, copies of old archival records and colourful examples from the prose, poetry and journalism of the era.
