March 14th

March 14th is known in Estonia as Emakeelepäev – a day to celebrate the country´s native language, Estonian.

Native Language Day (also sometimes called Mother Tongue Day) is a national holiday in Estonia that has been celebrated since 1996 on March 14, the birthday of the poet Kristjan Jaak Peterson.

Kristjan Jaak Peterson's birthday was chosen as Mother Tongue Day because Peterson was one of the first writers in the Estonian language.
