Kadriorg reading marathon marks Estonia's Native Language Day
Nearly 70 mostly prominent people will give readings from a wide range of Estonian literature at Kadriorg on Saturday, Native Language Day, including President Alar Karis.
The event starts literally at sunrise, at 6:41 a.m., and ended at sunset, just under 12 hours later.
Native Language Day - March 14th
March 14th is known in Estonia as Emakeelepäev – a day to celebrate the country´s native language, Estonian.
Native Language Day (also sometimes called Mother Tongue Day) is a national holiday in Estonia that has been celebrated since 1996 on March 14, the birthday of the poet Kristjan Jaak Peterson.
Kristjan Jaak Peterson's birthday was chosen as Native Language Day because Peterson was one of the first writers in the Estonian language.
